It was repeatedly used by King Olaf II Haraldsson of Norway, who ruled Norway from 1015 to 1028. In his attempt to reclaim his kingdom from the Danish king Cnut the Great, Olaf was killed on 29 July 1030 at the Battle of Stiklestad in central Norway.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Because of his pivotal role as the founder of the Norwegian state and the ruler who established Christianity as the kingdom&#8217;s official religion, Olaf was canonized just one year after his death, in 1031. He is buried in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, which until the Reformation was one of the most important pilgrimage destinations in Northern Europe.<\/p>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row full_width=&#8221;stretch_row_content&#8221; content_placement=&#8221;middle&#8221; equal_height=&#8221;yes&#8221; remove_bottom_col_margin=&#8221;true&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;1\/2&#8243;][vc_column_text css=&#8221;.vc_custom_1785404753248{margin-top: 15% !important;margin-right: 15% !important;margin-bottom: 15% !important;margin-left: 15% !important;}&#8221;]\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: center;\">Churches and chapels dedicated to St. Olaf were established near ancient harbours, and their locations bear witness to the medieval sea routes and Estonia&#8217;s close historical ties with Scandinavia. In Estonia, sanctuaries dedicated to St. Olaf were situated along the maritime route from Saaremaa to Tallinn: S\u00e4\u00e4re Chapel, Saastna Chapel, St. Olaf&#8217;s Churches in Vormsi and N\u00f5va, the St. Olaf Chapels on both Pakri Islands, and the well-known St. Olaf&#8217;s Church in Tallinn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\" style=\"text-align: center;\">These historic sacred sites and the former maritime routes have inspired the creation of the modern Estonian St. Olav Way. The route begins at the tip of the S\u00f5rve Peninsula, follows the coasts of Saaremaa and western and northern Estonia to St. Olaf&#8217;s Church in Tallinn, and continues via Finland to the pilgrimage route leading to Trondheim.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">The Estonian St. Olav Way forms part of the international St. Olav Ways network, which connects the historic pilgrimage routes of Denmark, Sweden, Finland, and Norway.
